AeroVironment Expands UAS Production Amid Contract Changes
March 16, 2026
AeroVironment, Inc. is actively expanding its manufacturing capacity and product portfolio in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) following the U.S. government's termination of the $1.5 billion BADGER contract under the SCAR program. The company acquired Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) for $200 million to enhance capabilities in small UAS, counter-UAS drones, and electric/hybrid propulsion technologies. Despite the contract cancellation impacting its unfunded backlog and revenue forecast for fiscal 2026, AeroVironment maintains a strong funded backlog exceeding $1.1 billion and continues to fulfill existing contracts, including production orders for Switchblade loitering munitions and sensor validation development with the U.S. Army.
- AeroVironment's acquisition of ESAero and expansion of production facilities, including a new site in Utah, signal increased capacity to meet growing demand for battlefield-proven drone systems.
- The termination of the BADGER contract reduces AeroVironment's unfunded backlog by $1.5 billion but does not affect its funded backlog, indicating ongoing procurement opportunities.
- Procurement professionals should note AeroVironment's continued role as a prime contractor for U.S. Army loitering munitions and sensor development programs, highlighting sustained investment in advanced UAS capabilities.
- Contractors and suppliers may find opportunities supporting AeroVironment's expanded manufacturing footprint and evolving product lines in counter-UAS and hybrid propulsion technologies.
Despite near-term headwinds from the SCAR program contract termination, AVAVs financial flexibility and commercial opportunities for BADGER support long-term growth.
