BC City Connection: Housing Edition | S2026E01 – Housing Master Plan
January 24, 2026
The City of Battle Creek is actively addressing its local housing shortage through an updated Housing Master Plan, building on the 2018 plan. The planning department, led by Darcy Schmidt, is facilitating mixed-use and mixed-income housing developments, including a notable project featuring 80 rental units with a significant portion reserved for low to moderate income residents. Efforts focus on increasing walkability, reducing car dependency, and revitalizing neighborhoods by encouraging infill development and accessory dwelling units to provide affordable housing options. Public engagement is ongoing to gather community input on zoning changes and housing strategies, with multiple meetings held and more planned to ensure neighborhood needs and concerns are addressed. The city is also exploring innovative housing models to bridge the gap between construction costs and housing affordability, aiming to create diverse, accessible living options within the city limits.
