General Dynamics Unveils Autonomous Counter-Drone Vehicle
March 24, 2026
General Dynamics Land Systems, in partnership with Epirus and Kodiak AI, has developed the Leonidas Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV), a self-driving truck equipped with a high-power microwave counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) technology. Currently in prototype phase, this system integrates autonomous driving software with directed energy counter-drone capabilities and is slated for testing with the U.S. Army's Joint Interagency Task Force 401. The AGV targets defense and homeland security applications, including protection of military installations, airports, railheads, and critical infrastructure.
- The collaboration highlights a growing procurement focus on autonomous platforms combined with directed energy systems for domestic and military counter-drone defense.
- Procurement professionals should note the involvement of the Army and JIATF 401 as key stakeholders, indicating potential future contract opportunities in C-UAS technologies.
- Vendors specializing in autonomous vehicles, directed energy, and counter-UAS systems may find strategic value in aligning with prime contractors like General Dynamics Land Systems.
- The prototype status suggests upcoming testing phases and possible solicitations, emphasizing the importance of monitoring Army requirements and engagement with Rapid Capabilities Critical Technologies Office initiatives.
The partnership here is really that this vehicle is delivering capability to the warfighter that’s, frankly, faster. We’re doing it faster and smarter and and really at a scale that we can kind of address the Army’s needs and what they’re asking for right now, where we see perhaps there’s a gap.
— Chet Gryczan, managing director, Kodiak Defense
We’re tight and close with the Army and the other services, but also JIATF 401. So we see the AGV as part of that solution for defense and homeland security, both for military installations, but also can be used for airports, air bases, railheads, national infrastructure [and] critical infrastructure.
— Andrew Brown, US Army growth lead, Epirus
As a team here, we’re looking for that definitive signal from the Army customer to go. I think it’s akin to holding back race horses here, we’re ready to answer the call of the Army when it comes.
