Pennsylvania Senate Requires POW/MIA Flag Display in Schools
March 23, 2026
The Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee approved Senate Bill 835, sponsored by Senator Tracy Pennycuick, mandating that public schools in Pennsylvania which display the American flag must also display the POW/MIA flag when space permits. This legislative change amends the Commonwealth's Public-School Code to honor military personnel who are prisoners of war or missing in action and to promote awareness of military service among students.
- Why this matters: School districts and procurement officials responsible for school facilities and flag displays will need to update their flag procurement and display policies to comply with the new state requirement.
- This may increase demand for POW/MIA flags and related display hardware, creating opportunities for vendors specializing in flag and school facility supplies.
- Procurement teams should coordinate with school administrators to ensure timely acquisition and installation of POW/MIA flags in compliance with the legislation.
- Contact information is available for legislative inquiries, facilitating direct communication for procurement planning and compliance guidance.
Our proposal amends the Commonwealths Public-School Code, which already outlines requirements regarding the display of the American flag, to also provide for the display of the POW/MIA flag whenever the U.S. flag is flown and space permits.
