USAF Seeks Backpack Kamikaze Drones
March 20, 2026
The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is actively pursuing the development and acquisition of backpack-portable, one-way kamikaze drones designed to enhance the strike capabilities of Special Tactics Teams and special operations forces. Multiple Requests for Information (RFIs) issued in early 2026 specify requirements for small, lightweight, first-person view (FPV) attack drones with ranges of 6 to over 12 miles, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability, and resilient communications to operate effectively in GPS-denied and contested environments. This initiative supports the Pentagon's broader Drone Dominance program, aiming to deliver cost-effective, high-volume drone strike options with a target unit cost below $2,000. The drones are intended to provide rapid deployment, extended operational reach, and integration with existing tactical networks, addressing current capability gaps in unmanned aerial systems for special operations missions.
- Multiple RFIs with response deadlines in April 2026 highlight urgent procurement interest and provide detailed technical specifications including payload weight, endurance, and communication resilience.
- The program emphasizes affordability and scalability, signaling opportunities for vendors specializing in compact FPV drone technologies and electronic warfare resistance.
- Procurement professionals should note the focus on interoperability with existing command and control systems and the requirement for GPS-independent navigation and frequency hopping communications.
- The $30 million contract for manufacturing LUCAS drones demonstrates ongoing investment and potential for follow-on contracts in this emerging capability area.
The specifications for this initiative are notably rigorous, emphasizing the need for a ground-launched vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone with a minimum 10 km range and 15 to 30 minutes endurance carrying a combat payload.

This system needs to integrate Global Positioning System (GPS), 4G/LTE/5G cellular connectivity, true frequency hopping between bands, and an optional repeater to extend operational range to over 20 kilometers.
— AFSOC (from RFI)
Air Force Special Operations Command and Special Tactics units currently lack a purpose-built FPV unmanned capability.
