State Department Seeks Space Industry Input
March 16, 2026
The U.S. Department of State is initiating a series of roundtable discussions with the commercial space industry from April through December 2026 to gather input on enhancing U.S. leadership in the global space economy. These sessions will address investment barriers, regulatory frameworks, and international cooperation, aligning with recent executive orders promoting competition and lunar exploration. Concurrently, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), under Director Michael Kratsios, has taken over coordination of national space policy following the revocation of the National Space Council. OSTP is tasked with integrating interagency space efforts, advancing initiatives such as lunar nuclear power development, and guiding NASA's exploration plans to support the administration's space agenda.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate evolving policy priorities and potential funding opportunities driven by OSTP's centralized coordination of space initiatives.
- Industry stakeholders can leverage the State Department's roundtables to influence regulatory and investment frameworks impacting commercial space contracts.
- Organizations involved in lunar exploration and space technology development should align proposals with OSTP-led national policy directions to enhance competitiveness.
- This coordinated approach indicates increased federal engagement in space commerce, suggesting emerging procurement opportunities in space infrastructure and technology sectors.
