DOE Advances Uranium Enrichment Partnership in Tennessee
March 16, 2026
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has awarded BWXT a $1.5 billion contract to develop domestic uranium enrichment capabilities through the Domestic Uranium Enrichment Centrifuge Experiment (DUECE) program. BWXT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have formalized a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on this initiative, combining ORNL's research and development expertise with BWXT's manufacturing and industrial capabilities. This partnership supports the DOE's strategic goal to reestablish a secure, domestic supply of enriched uranium critical for national defense missions. The contract includes licensing, manufacturing development, construction, and operation of a pilot centrifuge plant primarily located in Oak Ridge and Erwin, Tennessee.
- Why this matters: This contract represents a significant federal investment to revitalize U.S. uranium enrichment infrastructure, enhancing supply chain resilience for defense nuclear materials.
- Procurement professionals should note the emphasis on collaboration between national laboratories and private industry primes, highlighting opportunities for subcontractors and technology providers in centrifuge manufacturing and nuclear technology.
- The Tennessee-based facilities and operations indicate regional industrial growth and potential local contracting opportunities.
- Organizations involved in nuclear technology, manufacturing, and defense supply chains should evaluate how this program may influence future DOE procurements and strategic partnerships.
BWXT and ORNL have been trusted partners in advancing nuclear technologies for national defense, and this agreement builds on that legacy. By leveraging our manufacturing strengths and ORNL's scientific leadership, we're positioned to deliver on NNSA's timeline, bolstering supply chains and mission readiness.
— Ron Dailey, President of BWXT Tennessee Operations
