Revolution Wind Delivers Power to New England Grid
March 17, 2026
The Revolution Wind offshore wind project, a 704-megawatt renewable energy initiative jointly developed by Global Infrastructure Partners’ Skyborn Renewables and Ørsted, has begun delivering its first power to the New England electric grid as of March 2026. This milestone marks a significant advancement in regional clean energy deployment, supporting energy reliability and sustainability goals across Rhode Island, Connecticut, and the broader New England region. The project is approximately 93% complete and is expected to reach full commercial operation by the second half of 2026. It includes 20-year fixed-price power purchase agreements with utilities in Rhode Island and Connecticut, locking energy prices at approximately $0.09 per kWh, which is anticipated to reduce electricity costs for consumers and enhance grid stability. The development has also generated thousands of local union jobs, underscoring its economic impact alongside environmental benefits. Federal courts upheld the project's continuation despite prior national security concerns raised by the federal government, reflecting judicial support for renewable energy infrastructure.
- The project supplies electricity to over 350,000 homes and businesses, with Connecticut receiving 304 MW, meeting about 5% of the state's electricity demand.
- Procurement professionals should note the involvement of major developers Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners’ Skyborn Renewables, and the long-term fixed-price contracts that may influence future renewable energy procurement models.
- The project's progress and judicial affirmation indicate a favorable environment for offshore wind development in the region, presenting opportunities for contractors specializing in renewable energy infrastructure, grid integration, and union labor.
- Agencies and contractors should consider the implications of stable pricing and regional energy diversification for planning and risk management in energy procurement strategies.
Today’s milestone marks an important step forward for Rhode Island's energy future. Offshore wind is part of our state’s all-of-the-above energy strategy, one that strengthens our energy supply and supports long-term reliability for residents and businesses.
— Dan McKee, Governor
Wind power alone will not solve our energy demands, but 700 new megawatts will be surging into New England is undeniable proof that our nation's innovators are building trades union, and the Merchant Mariners are up to the job to power our country in the 21st century.
— Joe Courtney, Congressman
This project is key to diversifying our energy supply and lowering utility costs for families and businesses. I congratulate the project’s developer and the many skilled Connecticut workers who’ve made Revolution Wind possible on achieving its first power deliveries to the grid. As Revolution Wind ramps up in the coming months, we look forward to it delivering affordable, reliable, clean electricity that will power 350,000 homes.
