UK Ministry of Defence Awards Royal Navy USV Contract
March 12, 2026
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Kraken Technology Group a £12.3 million (US$16.42 million) contract in March 2026 to supply 20 modular uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) to the Royal Navy's Surface Flotilla under Project Beehive. This procurement marks a significant advancement in the Royal Navy's Hybrid Navy initiative, integrating autonomous and crewed platforms to enhance operational capabilities and safety. The USVs will be deployed with the Coastal Forces Squadron and 47 Commando Royal Marines to perform hazardous tasks such as mine neutralization, supporting future autonomous naval operations.
- Why this matters: This contract demonstrates the UK MoD's commitment to modernizing naval forces through unmanned systems, creating opportunities for vendors specializing in autonomous maritime technologies.
- The open architecture design of Kraken's USVs facilitates rapid integration of new capabilities, signaling ongoing innovation and potential follow-on procurements.
- Procurement professionals should note the emphasis on hybrid crewed-uncrewed operations, which may influence future requirements and contract solicitations.
- Contractors and industry stakeholders can leverage this development to align offerings with the Royal Navy's evolving operational concepts and technology adoption strategies.
The Royal Navys investment in unmanned surface vessels marks a significant milestone on our journey toward a Hybrid Navy. By integrating cutting-edge autonomous technology with our existing capabilities, we ensure that our forces remain at the forefront of maritime innovation and combat effectiveness.
