The State of Alaska is gathering budgetary and technical input to repower the research vessel R/V Medeia. - Buyer: State of Alaska, Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries. - Opportunity: A request for information for planning and budget estimates, not a binding bid or award. - Requested equipment: Two main propulsion engines and two matched marine gears, plus propulsion controls, monitoring, starting and electrical equipment, exhaust and cooling components, and a one-year spares package. - Caterpillar (CAT C18/C18 B) is preferred; the conceptual study evaluates two CAT C18 B Heavy Duty engines rated at 636 HP each. - Cummins QSK19-M is acceptable. John Deere and Detroit are also identified as possible engine alternatives. No replacement gear make or model is specified. - Existing equipment: Two Detroit Diesel 16V-92 engines and Twin Disc MG-530 gears are to be removed. Existing propellers, shafts, and installed keel coolers are important compatibility considerations; the existing 4.04:1 gear ratio is a reference, not a requirement. - Work scope: Ship check, engineering and design; removal and installation; system integration; commissioning, dock and sea trials; stability testing and an updated stability book; documentation, crew training, and facility support. - Notable requirements: Recommend equipment suited to extended idle and light-load operation, frequent clutching, and pot hauling; address current emissions requirements and cooling needs; provide lead times, estimated vessel outage, budget prices, qualifications, and identify authorized engine and gear parts-and-service dealers in Juneau. Sea trials include at least four hours at rated load; stability documentation covers up to six operating conditions. - Schedule: The target work window is November 2027 through March 2028, with an approximate 30-day outage target; contractors are asked to confirm realistic timing. - Other named organizations and suppliers: Elliott Bay Design Group prepared the conceptual repower study; Universal Iron Works is identified as the vessel builder. ZF propulsion controls are referenced, while Duramax Marine and Maxim Silencers appear in reference drawings and are not specified as required suppliers.
