The U.S. Geological Survey is seeking a research partner to improve automated fish monitoring for invasive-carp prevention at Brandon Road Lock and Dam. - Government buyer: U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Columbia Environmental Research Center, through the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU). - Opportunity: One eligible CESU partner will conduct a two-year cooperative research project using the Live Imaging Sonar Surveillance Array (LISSA). - Requested work: Develop AI and deep-learning models to detect and count fish, estimate their size, determine movement direction, and assess risk from high-frequency sonar imagery. - Deliverables and requirements: Document model performance, workflows, and baseline fish behavior; provide a technical summary report and final peer-reviewed manuscript. Results support evaluation of deterrents and operational decisions to help prevent invasive carp from moving toward the Great Lakes. - Funding: Up to $180,000; cost sharing is not required. - OEMs and commercial vendors: None identified. No equipment or commercial products are requested for purchase.

Description

The U.S. Geological Survey is offering a cooperative agreement to a participating partner of the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit. The project supports research and technology development to automate fish detection, enumeration, size and movement-direction analysis, and risk assessment using the Live Imaging Sonar Surveillance Array at Brandon Road Lock and Dam. Work will help assess deterrent performance and identify high-risk invasive carp events to inform operational decisions and efforts to prevent carp from moving upstream toward the Great Lakes. One award is anticipated, with total funding of $180,000 for a two-year project period.
