The Defense Threat Reduction Agency is seeking research to establish domestic, scalable growth of large-format CZT crystals for radiation detection. - Government buyer: Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Department of War (DoW), DTRA SBIR/STTR Program. - Opportunity: Phase I SBIR topic DTR27BZ02-NV006, focused on domestic scalable growth of large-format pixelated cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) crystals for advanced radiation detection. - OEMs and vendors: No OEMs, vendors, or commercial part numbers are identified. No finished detector systems or crystals are being purchased; this is an R&D opportunity. - Technical target: Nominal crystal dimensions are 44 × 44 × 15 mm for room-temperature gamma-ray detection and spectroscopy supporting WMD detection, nuclear forensics, and related missions. - Phase I work: Assess domestic and allied growth capabilities and material sources; design a growth and machining process; demonstrate at least one near-target crystal or scalable proxy; and characterize material uniformity, performance, supply-chain risks, yield, and commercialization potential. - Follow-on work: Phase II would refine and scale the process to produce multiple crystals, with independent characterization of a lot of at least three to five crystals or equivalent validated output. Optional Phase III may support pilot production and commercial transition. - Key requirements: Crystal growth must be U.S.-based, use traceable U.S. or allied materials, demonstrate reproducible quality and performance, and include a credible commercial transition path. - Funding and duration: Phase I is limited to seven months and a $250,000 base amount, excluding TABA. Follow-on Phase II may run up to 24 months with a $1,500,000 ceiling, excluding TABA.
Description
The topic is titled “Domestic Scalable Growth Of Large-Format Pixelated CZT Crystals For Advanced Radiation Detection.” It is listed under the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s 2027 SBIR program, Release 2. The DTRA Phase I instructions specify a project duration of seven months and a maximum base amount of $250,000, excluding Technical and Business Assistance. Proposals are to be submitted through DSIP; the topic response deadline is January 6, 2027.
