AFOSR and Taiwan’s NSTC are seeking U.S.–Taiwan research teams for a collaborative materials and nanostructures program. - Government buyers: Department of the Air Force, Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), through the Asian Office of Aerospace Research and Development (AOARD), in partnership with Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). - Research requested: Three-year collaborative basic research on AI-driven materials discovery; materials and nanostructures for energy-efficient electronic, photonic, and quantum information technologies; and quantum geometry in solids. - Team and funding requirements: Each team pairs one investigator from a U.S. institution or Department of Defense laboratory with one investigator from a Taiwan institution. AFOSR expects approximately eight U.S. research-grant awards, with up to $150,000 per U.S. principal investigator annually; NSTC funds the Taiwan investigators. The program lists $3.6 million in total funding and describes AFOSR funding of $1.2 million per year. - Research priorities: Proposals should demonstrate scientific merit, distinctive U.S.–Taiwan research synergy, and relevance to Air Force and NSTC interests, including potential transition to areas of interest to AFRL. - Proposal approach: Teams submit a joint pre-proposal to AFOSR and NSTC; selected teams submit full proposals separately to their respective agencies. - OEMs and products: No commercial OEMs, vendors, products, part numbers, or product quantities are identified; this is a research-services opportunity.
Description
This three-year Notice of Funding Opportunity supports collaborative basic research by US and Taiwan investigators in nanoscience and related emerging technology areas. Each team must include one investigator from a US institution or DoD laboratory and one from a Taiwan institution, and submit a joint pre-proposal to both AFOSR and NSTC. Full proposals are submitted separately to the respective agencies after selection. AFOSR funding for selected US projects is listed as $1,200,000 per year for three years, with up to $150,000 per year for US principal investigators.
