Brookhaven Science Associates is seeking two custom power supplies for superconducting magnets in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Electron-Ion Collider Hadron Storage Ring. - Government buyer: Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), managing the Electron-Ion Collider project at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), under the Department of Energy. - Products requested: - One Model A main arc dipole power supply. - One Model B main arc quadrupole power supply. - A Controls Interface Test Box (real-time waveform generator) is identified as government-furnished equipment, not a priced purchase item; the contractor must safely handle it and return unused or defective items to BSA. - Technical requirements: Both supplies are ramped, two-quadrant DC systems rated up to 7,000 A, with maximum operating current of 6,300 A. Model A has a maximum ramp voltage of 400 V and handles 110.25 MJ of stored magnetic energy; Model B has a maximum ramp voltage of 100 V and handles 17.15 MJ. Requirements include precision current regulation, quench-protection and energy-extraction interfaces, redundant safety controls, PLC/EPICS integration, low-conductivity-water cooling, and factory verification. BNL provides the external energy-extraction resistors and quench-detection equipment. - Contractor scope and notable requirements: Design, manufacture, inspection, testing, and delivery, including design reviews requiring BSA approval, NRTL certification, factory and site acceptance testing, and end-item documentation. STEP geometry files are available from the Contract Specialist; they are simplified illustrations, not mechanical construction files, and the vendor must perform substantial thermal analysis. The solicitation also identifies an option to commission the supplies at a BNL-designated facility. - Schedule and warranty: Design reviews are planned at 12 and 20 weeks after award; end-item documentation at 120 weeks; quadrupole supply delivery at 173 weeks; and dipole supply delivery at 186 weeks. Warranty must be at least two years from the final acceptance test. - OEMs and vendors: No commercial OEMs, manufacturers, or resellers are named in the provided materials. BSA and BNL are identified as the buyer/project organization, not as product OEMs.
Description
This is an RFI/Sources Sought for HSR HF Dipole and Quad SC Magnet PS and Quench. Please review the three posted attachments for requested information from your company. All questions and submittals should be sent to the Contract Specialist listed in the RFI document and listed on this SAM.gov posting.
STEP files are available but are unable to be loaded into this system. Please contact the Contract Specialist for those files to be emailed. A technical note for these files: These STEP geometry files are NOT mechanical construction files. The files show a simplified view the 3D stripline kicker geometry based on the electromagnetic design, as illustration for the mechanical implementation of a RF test mockup (no vacuum) and of a vacuum compatible prototype stripline kicker. Beside that, there still is substantial thermal analysis to be performed by the vendor.
Submittals are due no later than 12/11/2026 at 5PM EST.
