The FAA issued an airworthiness directive for certain Boeing 787 aircraft with specified Rolls-Royce Deutschland Trent 1000 engines. - Government buyer: U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), AIR-520 Continued Operational Safety Branch. - OEMs: Boeing (787 aircraft and referenced service material) and Rolls-Royce Deutschland (Trent 1000 engines). - Aircraft and affected components: Certain Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 airplanes; right-engine left fan cowls with part numbers 725Z2300-307, 725Z2300-305, and 725Z2300-5003. - Required actions: Operators must check maintenance records or inspect the right engine to identify the fan-cowl part number, then complete applicable actions, including modification or replacement. Installation of the identified parts is restricted on applicable airplanes where they are not already installed. - Safety rationale: The directive addresses the risk of debris from one engine damaging components in the opposite engine, potentially causing an in-flight shutdown of both engines. - Procurement status: This is a regulatory safety action, not a solicitation to purchase products or services; quantities and contract value are not specified.
Description
The FAA is adopting a final airworthiness directive for certain Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 airplanes equipped with specified Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines. The directive requires a maintenance records check or inspection of the right engine to identify the left fan cowl part number, followed by applicable on-condition actions, including modifying or replacing the fan cowl. It addresses a safety risk involving insufficient protection from possible cross-engine debris, which could damage right-engine systems and lead to an in-flight dual-engine shutdown. The AD is effective November 23, 2026.
