DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office is seeking research and prototype development for measuring and predicting transient wave behavior in complex liquids. - Government buyer: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Defense Sciences Office (DSO). - Research scope: Develop and validate experimental diagnostics and physics-based computational models together, including studies of shock waves in water and other fluids, salinity effects, and coupled thermodynamic, mechanical, and compositional responses. - Prototype deliverables: - Wave-diagnostic hardware design and technical drawings, with an associated standard operating procedure (SOP). - Standalone wave-prediction software for commonly available CPU or GPU high-performance computing platforms, with an associated SOP. The tool is intended to use the pre-shock fluid state and wave Mach number to predict the shock profile. - Validation and reports: Demonstrate experimental-rig operation and validate predictions using experimental data and first-principles kinetic-theory simulations. Phase 2 extends testing to higher shock intensity and evaluates precision and prediction accuracy across relevant fluid conditions. - Phases and funding limits: Phase 1 is a 9-month feasibility study, capped at $550,000. A 9-month Phase 2 proof-of-concept option is capped at $445,000. Combined funding, including performer cost share, may not exceed $995,000. - Performance duration: Up to 18 months total, with a go/no-go decision after Phase 1. Phase 1 milestones are planned for Months 1, 3, 6, and 9; Phase 2 milestones are planned for Months 12, 15, and 18. - OEMs and vendors: No commercial OEMs, vendors, product models, or part numbers are identified. DARPA is the government buyer.
Description
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is issuing a Disruption Opportunity (DO), inviting submissions of innovative basic or applied research concepts in the technical domain of developing novel metrology for understanding wave propagation in compressible fluids. This DO is issued under the Program Announcement for Disruptioneering, DARPA-PA-25-07. All awards will be made in the form of an Other Transaction (OT) for Prototype project.Additional Links:Original Solication: DARPA-PA-25-07 - Disruptioneering Program Announcement
