The NIH Common Fund Human Virome Program is inviting pilot research applications to advance understanding of the healthy human virome. - Buyer: National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the NIH Common Fund’s Human Virome Program (HVP); no specific sub-agency or office is identified. - Funding opportunity: Approximately 13 awards are anticipated, with individual awards of $50,000 to $100,000 and estimated total program funding of $2,000,000. - Research priorities may include: - Validating, improving, or complementing HVP tools using human specimens. - Using animal samples to refine tools and support translation to human research. - Expanding research cohorts or biospecimen sampling sites. - Developing virome research tools, assays, and methods. - Studying functional interactions between the human virome and its host. - Collaboration across the HVP is expected; applicants outside the existing program are encouraged. Proposed work should not overlap with current HVP efforts, and clinical trials are not allowed. - Eligible applicants include specified U.S. government entities, nonprofits, educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations. Foreign organizations and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are ineligible; applications involving foreign subawards or subcontracts will not be considered. - No commercial OEMs, vendors, products, part numbers, or quantities are identified; this is a research funding opportunity rather than a purchase of goods or services.

Projects may validate or improve HVP tools using human specimens, use animal samples to refine and apply tools, expand cohorts or sampling sites, develop virome research methods, or investigate interactions between the human virome and host. Collaboration across the HVP is expected, applicants outside the current HVP are encouraged, and projects should not overlap with existing HVP efforts. The award minimum is $50,000 and the maximum is $100,000; 13 awards are expected.
