The Federal Aviation Administration proposes simplifying physical-containment requirements for commercial space launches and reentries. - Government buyer: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), U.S. Department of Transportation; no sub-agency or office is identified. - Proposed change: Clarify the definition of physical containment and revise 14 CFR part 450. - Operational effect: Operators using physical containment as a hazard-control strategy would not have to develop flight hazard areas under the existing 14 CFR 450.133 analysis requirements. - Safety provisions: Related flight hazard area requirements would be revised to address conflicting requirements while preserving public-safety protections. - OEMs and vendors: None mentioned. This is a proposed regulatory change, not a request to procure products or services.
Description
The FAA proposes to amend its commercial space launch and reentry licensing regulations to streamline licensing and reduce regulatory burden. When operators use physical containment as a hazard control strategy, the proposal would remove the requirement to develop flight hazard areas in accordance with existing flight hazard area analysis requirements. The proposal also revises related regulatory provisions, including the definition of physical containment and requirements in 14 CFR part 450. Comments are due November 4, 2026.
