Alaska is considering a land-management agreement to support the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s proposed Jonesville Shooting Range and Park. - Government buyer and applicant - State agency: Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Mining, Land and Water, Southcentral Regional Land Office. - Applicant: Matanuska-Susitna Borough. - Project area: Up to 210 acres in the Jonesville Public Use Area near Slipper Lake in Sutton, Alaska. - Proposed project - A cooperative resource management agreement would assign management and enforcement responsibilities for state-owned land and facilitate construction and management of a multiple-lane public shooting range. - Planned site features include a park and trails, parking, a multipurpose building, water access, and related site work. Additional education and retail facilities may be considered later. - The Borough anticipates approximately $7.5 million in capital investment, contingent on grants and other funding. This is a project investment estimate, not an identified contract value. - Development is planned in phases; Phase 1 construction is planned for summer/fall 2027. The overall completion date and agreement term are not specified. - Site study and requirements - PND Engineers assessed six potential locations and recommended the site immediately west of Slipper Lake, citing space, safety barriers, and comparatively lower construction, maintenance, and administrative burdens. - Soil assessment and coordination with Alaska DEC may be needed to address potential lead contamination. - Only part of the public-use area is expected to be closed during construction. - OEMs and vendors - No product manufacturers or OEMs are identified; no equipment or products are being solicited. - Named consultant: PND Engineers.
