Notice of Intended Repatriation of Native American Cultural Items by California State University, Fullerton

This notice announces California State University, Fullerton's (CSUF) intent to repatriate two Native American cultural items under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA): - Government Buyer: - Department of the Interior, National Park Service - California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) - Cultural Items for Repatriation: - One complete pestle (Accession #117.10.1) - One stone pipe bowl (Accession #117.7.1) - Both items are considered objects of cultural patrimony - Items originated from Orange County and Costa Mesa, California - Cultural Affiliation: - Morongo Band of Mission Indians - Pechanga Band of Indians (Luiseno) - Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation-Belardes - Notable Requirements: - No hazardous substances are present on the items - Requests for repatriation may be submitted by lineal descendants or culturally affiliated tribes/organizations - CSUF will evaluate and determine the most appropriate requestor if there are competing claims - Purpose: - To return culturally significant items to affiliated Native American groups, recognizing their ongoing cultural importance

California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) intends to repatriate certain cultural items that are objects of cultural patrimony and have cultural affiliation with Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The items include one complete pestle and one stone pipe bowl, originating from Orange County and Costa Mesa, CA, respectively. CSUF has identified a cultural connection with several Indian Tribes including the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the Pechanga Band of Indians. Repatriation may occur on or after October 16, 2026. Requests for repatriation can be submitted by lineal descendants or culturally affiliated tribes or organizations.
