Description

The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) has completed an inventory of human remains in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The inventory identified human remains representing at least one individual of Native American ancestry, with no associated funerary objects present. The remains are culturally affiliated with multiple Indian Tribes including the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma and others. Repatriation of the human remains may occur on or after October 9, 2026, and written requests for repatriation must be sent to the Director of Collections & Exhibitions at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
