This notice concerns the intended repatriation of Native American cultural items by Arizona State University's Center for Archaeology and Society Repository (CASR), School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC), in Tempe, Arizona. - Issued by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior - No procurement or contracting action; this is a statutory compliance notice under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) - Items to be repatriated: - 12 lots of unassociated funerary objects, including: - 10 lots of faunal bone - 1 lot of ground stone objects - 1 lot of raw stone objects - 20 lots of sacred objects or objects of cultural patrimony, including: - 2 lots of ceramic objects - 2 lots of chipped stone objects - 4 lots of ground stone objects - 12 lots of shell objects - Items were removed from the Science Library site in Maricopa County, Arizona, during construction of the ASU Nobel Science Library building - Cultural affiliation identified with the Ak-Chin Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community of the Gila River Indian Reservation, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community of the Salt River Reservation, and the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona - No OEMs, vendors, or commercial products/services are involved
Description
In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository (CASR) acting in place of the Arizona State University (ASU) School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) intends to repatriate certain cultural items. These items meet the definition of unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and/or objects of cultural patrimony and have a cultural affiliation with the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations listed in the notice. The repatriation may occur on or after September 30, 2026. The notice includes details about the types and lots of cultural items and the affiliated tribes.
