This notice concerns the intended repatriation of sacred and culturally significant objects by History Colorado, under the oversight of the National Park Service: - Government Buyer: - Department of the Interior, National Park Service - History Colorado, Denver, CO (as the repatriating institution) - No OEMs or commercial vendors are involved, as the items are unique cultural artifacts, not manufactured products - Products/Items Requested (for repatriation): - 15 sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony, including: - Beaded pouch - Buckskin shirt - Eagle bone whistle - Headdress - Two standard pipes - Claw necklace - Tomahawk pipe - Three tomahawks - Pipe bag - Bone war whistle - Chekpa pouch - Woman's pipe - Unique/Notable Requirements: - Items are affiliated with the Oglala Sioux Tribe and potentially other Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations - Many items were acquired from the collection of Stephen Olop, a former Superintendent for the Office of Indian Affairs in South Dakota - Items may be contaminated due to shared storage with objects that tested positive for heavy metals - The notice outlines the process for tribes or organizations to submit repatriation requests and addresses the handling of competing or joint claims

Description

History Colorado intends to repatriate certain cultural items that are defined as sacred objects or objects of cultural patrimony. These items have a cultural affiliation with Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The repatriation may occur on or after September 14, 2026. The items include a variety of ceremonial objects such as a beaded pouch, buckskin shirt, eagle bone whistle, headdress, pipes, tomahawks, and others, many of which were acquired from the collection of Stephen Olop.
