Notice of Inventory Completion for Native American Remains and Objects at Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences

This notice from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, concerns the completion of an inventory of Native American human remains and funerary objects by the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences (SIIAS): - No procurement of products or services is being requested or awarded - The inventory includes: - Human remains representing at least one individual - Five lots of associated funerary objects: lithic projectile points, lithic spear points, flint chips, knives, and scrapers - Items were removed from mound sites in Florida in the late 19th century and donated to SIIAS - The notice establishes cultural affiliation with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, Seminole Tribe of Florida, and The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma - This is an informational notice in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)

Description

The Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences (SIIAS) has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The inventory includes human remains representing at least one individual and five lots of associated funerary objects such as lithic projectile points, spear points, flint chips, knives, and scrapers. These remains and objects were removed from mound locations in Florida in the late 19th century and donated to SIIAS. The notice establishes a cultural affiliation between these remains and objects and certain Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. Repatriation may occur on or after September 2, 2026.
