Notice of Inventory Completion for Associated Funerary Objects by Caltrans in San Diego, CA

This notice announces the completion of an inventory of associated funerary objects by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in San Diego County, under the oversight of the Department of the Interior and in coordination with the National Park Service. - No procurement of goods or services is being solicited or awarded - Caltrans has inventoried 16 lots of cultural items from three archaeological sites, including: - Shell artifacts (3 lots) - Chipped stone artifacts (2 lots) - Non-human faunal remains (3 lots) - Soil samples (3 lots) - Historic items (2 lots) - Carbon sample (1 lot) - Lithic artifacts (2 lots) - Items were recovered during a 1985 highway project and are housed at San Diego State University - The notice is issued in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) - Caltrans has determined a cultural affiliation between these items and several Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations - The notice outlines the process for repatriation requests from eligible tribes or organizations - No OEMs, vendors, or contract opportunities are involved in this notice

Description

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has completed an inventory of associated funerary objects from three archaeological sites in San Diego County. The inventory includes 16 lots of cultural items such as shell, chipped stone, faunal remains, soil samples, historic items, carbon samples, and lithics. These items were recovered during a 1985 highway project excavation and are housed at San Diego State University under Caltrans control. Caltrans has determined a cultural affiliation between these funerary objects and several Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations. Repatriation of these objects may occur on or after August 31, 2026.
