Description

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing to repeal the color additive regulation that permits the use of Citrus Red No. 2 for coloring the skins of mature oranges. Certification data indicates that Citrus Red No. 2 has not been used or certified for use in food in the United States since 2020. The FDA tentatively concludes that the authorized use of this color additive has been abandoned and that the regulation is outdated and unnecessary. The proposal includes an extended effective date and compliance date to allow for depletion of any remaining certified supply. Comments on the proposed order are due by August 24, 2026.
