This notice concerns the completion of an inventory of Native American human remains and funerary objects at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. - Government Buyer: - National Park Service, Department of the Interior - University of Tennessee, Department of Anthropology and Frank H. McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture - Inventory Details: - Human remains representing at least 33 individuals from the Mississippian period - 39 lots of associated funerary objects, including: - Ceramic, shell, lithic, faunal, botanical, and mixed materials - Items removed from two archaeological sites in Polk County, Tennessee (sites 40PK1 and 40PK16) - Cultural Affiliation: - Remains and objects are affiliated with the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, The Muscogee (Creek) Nation, and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma - Notable Requirements: - Some remains have been treated with preservatives, glues, and lacquer for preservation and reconstruction - Notice issued in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) - No procurement or contract opportunity is associated with this notice

Description

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the University of Tennessee, Department of Anthropology and the Frank H. McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture (UTK) has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects. They have determined a cultural affiliation between these remains and objects and Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The inventory includes remains of at least 33 individuals and 39 lots of associated funerary objects from sites in Polk County, Tennessee, dating to the Mississippian period. Repatriation may occur on or after August 21, 2026.
