Description

The community of ʔaq̓am is seeking to continue prescribed burning on ʔaq̓am lands to reduce wildfire risk and restore the land to pre-colonial conditions. The project area, Lot 79, covers 137 hectares within the southwest corner of Kootenay IR 1 near Cranbrook Airport and includes five Treatment Units for flexible implementation. The initial burn, TU 4, approximately 44 hectares, is planned for Fall 2026, with other units scheduled for Spring 2027. Objectives include ecosystem enhancement, wildfire risk reduction to nearby homes, and continued ʔaq̓am-led land stewardship.
