Description
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) designated the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary (LONMS) on June 6, 2024, with the final rule effective July 22, 2024. However, the effective date for the provision prohibiting grappling into or anchoring on shipwreck sites was initially stayed until July 21, 2026. This action further extends the stay of this provision's effective date until September 21, 2028, to allow NOAA additional time to develop a shipwreck mooring program, install mooring buoys, and conduct public outreach and education. The extension balances the protection of shipwrecks with public access to the sanctuary. All other regulatory provisions remain in effect during this stay.
