Notice of Inventory Completion for Native American Remains and Funerary Objects at Indiana University

This notice concerns the completion of an inventory of Native American human remains and funerary objects at Indiana University, overseen by the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. - Indiana University has finalized an inventory in compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) - Inventory includes: - Human remains of at least 31 individuals - One lot of associated funerary objects (faunal bones) from the Major Site (15He2/5) near the Ohio River - Cultural affiliation established with the following Indian Tribes: - Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma - Cherokee Nation - Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians - Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma - Miami Tribe of Oklahoma - Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma - Quapaw Nation - Shawnee Tribe - The Osage Nation - United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma - Notice outlines the process for repatriation requests and requirements for claimants - No OEMs, vendors, or procurement activities are involved in this notice

Description

Indiana University has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The inventory includes remains of at least 31 individuals and associated funerary objects recovered from the Major Site near the Ohio River. The university has determined a cultural affiliation between these remains and several Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. Repatriation of these remains and objects may occur on or after August 14, 2026, with requests for repatriation to be sent to the designated university representative.
