Notice of Intended Repatriation of Cultural Items by San Diego State University

This notice concerns the intended repatriation of cultural items by San Diego State University (SDSU), in partnership with the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. - Government Buyer: - San Diego State University (SDSU) - Department of the Interior - National Park Service - No OEMs or commercial vendors are involved, as this is not a procurement or purchase opportunity. - Items for repatriation include: - Lithics (archaeological stone tools and fragments) - Ground stone artifacts - Non-human faunal items (animal remains) - Post-contact artifacts - Shell artifacts - Ceramics - Soil samples - Charcoal samples - Fire-affected rock - Historic items - These items are classified as unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. - The repatriation process is conducted under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). - Eligible Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations may submit written requests for repatriation. - The process for resolving competing requests is outlined in the notice. - No products or services are being procured; this is a legal and cultural compliance action.

Description

San Diego State University (SDSU) intends to repatriate certain cultural items that meet the definition of unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and/or objects of cultural patrimony. These items have a cultural affiliation with various Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The repatriation involves multiple lots of cultural items, including lithics, ground stone, non-human faunal items, post-contact items, shell, ceramics, soil samples, charcoal, fire-affected rock, and historic items. The items were removed from various sites in San Diego County, CA, and SDSU holds accession numbers for these collections. Repatriation may occur on or after August 14, 2026.
