Description

The community of ʔaq̓am is seeking to continue prescribed burning on ʔaq̓am lands to reduce wildfire risk and restore the land to pre-colonial conditions. The project area, Lot 79, covers 137 hectares within the southwest corner of Kootenay IR 1 near Cranbrook Airport, with nearby infrastructure including homes and distribution lines. The burn unit is divided into 5 Treatment Units to allow flexibility in resourcing and scheduling, with TU 4 planned for Fall 2026 and others for Spring 2027.
