Description
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) proposes placing the substance tianeptine, including its isomers, esters, ethers, salts, and salts of isomers, esters, and ethers, in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. This proposed rule would impose regulatory controls and sanctions applicable to Schedule I controlled substances on persons who handle or propose to handle tianeptine, including manufacturing, distributing, importing, exporting, research, instructional activities, chemical analysis, or possession. Comments on the proposal must be submitted by August 7, 2026. The proposal is based on findings that tianeptine has a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
