This Army STTR opportunity seeks innovative research and development proposals for advanced materials: - Government buyer: U.S. Army (Small Business Technology Transfer program) - No specific OEMs or vendors are named in the solicitation - Products/services requested: - Development of highly conductive brominated graphitic fibers for electromagnetic attenuation - Creation of advanced carbonaceous-based obscurant materials in fiber form - Demonstration of production capability at both small (≥50 mg) and larger (up to 1 kg) scales - Design of a scalable manufacturing process for future commercialization - Unique requirements: - Fibers must achieve improved conductivity via heat treatment and bromination - Materials are intended for military obscurant applications (e.g., grenades, munitions) and may have broader industrial uses (electronics, fuel cells, etc.) - Emphasis on scalability and commercialization potential - Period of performance: Up to 6 months - Funding amount: Up to $197,000
Description
This solicitation seeks the development of high performing graphitic fibers with enhanced conductivity through heat treatment and bromination for use in infrared and centimeter-wave electromagnetic attenuation. The project aims to produce cost-effective, scalable carbonaceous-based obscurant materials to protect military assets by obscuring them from enemy imaging technologies. The effort includes demonstrating production of graphitized fibers, scaling up manufacturing processes, and integrating the technology into military applications such as improved grenades and munitions. The technology may also have broader applications in various industries including electronics and fuel cells.
