Notice of Intended Repatriation of Cultural Items by University of California, Berkeley

This notice concerns the intended repatriation of cultural items by the University of California, Berkeley, under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA): - Government buyer: - University of California, Berkeley - Administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior - Cultural items to be repatriated: - Two objects of cultural patrimony (baskets) of Maidu origin, specifically from the Konkow Valley Band of Maidu Indians - Two unassociated funerary objects (charmstones) removed from Oroville, Pulga, Butte County, California - No OEMs, vendors, or commercial products/services are involved - Notable requirements: - Written requests for repatriation may be submitted by lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations with demonstrated cultural affiliation - Evidence of cultural affiliation must be provided - Competing or joint requests for repatriation are possible - No procurement of goods or services is taking place; this is a legal and cultural process, not a commercial opportunity

Description

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the University of California, Berkeley intends to repatriate certain cultural items that meet the definition of unassociated funerary objects or objects of cultural patrimony and that have a cultural affiliation with the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The items include two objects of cultural patrimony (baskets) and two unassociated funerary objects (charmstones). Repatriation may occur on or after July 6, 2026. Requests for repatriation must be sent to the authorized representative at the University of California, Berkeley.
