Description

This final rule by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) removes obsolete requirements from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 217, which pertains to bus emergency exits and window retention and release. The obsolete requirements apply to school buses manufactured before September 1, 1994. The rule was proposed in a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) published on May 30, 2025, received no comments, and is now adopted without amendment. The effective date of this final rule is July 6, 2026.
