This opportunity seeks contractors for the supply, installation, and testing of stainless-steel argon gas piping for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), managed by Fermilab and the Department of Energy. - Government Buyer: - U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Fermilab, Fermi Forward Discovery Group LLC (FFDG), and LBNF Project - OEMs and Vendors: - No specific OEMs or vendors are named in the solicitation or attachments - Products/Services Requested: - Supply, installation, and testing of stainless-steel argon gas pipeline - Pipeline routes: from the surface Argon Receiving Facility, through the Ross Shaft, to the Central Utility Cavern (CUC) at the 4850 Level underground - Pipe specifications: - 8-inch diameter Schedule 10 (surface to Ross shaft and Ross shaft to CUC) - 6-inch diameter Schedule 10 (Ross shaft collar to 4850 Level) - Schedule 40 stainless steel pipe for surface trench - Associated work: pipe supports, expansion loops, welding, leak testing, and delegated design as required - Purchase and delivery of all piping materials (no government-furnished materials) - Testing and commissioning of installed piping - Notable Requirements: - Handling and underground transport of approximately 40,000 metric tons of argon (liquid to gas conversion and transfer) - Compliance with strict Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) standards, including site-specific safety plans, OSHA compliance, and hazard analyses - Robust Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs, including NVLAP/A2LA-accredited materials testing, daily QC documentation, and formal inspection/certification - Coordination with the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) and other on-site activities - Adherence to detailed project schedules, milestones, and reporting requirements - All labor, materials, equipment, and supervision to be provided by the contractor - Performance Locations: - Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), including Ross Shaft, Central Utility Cavern (CUC), and associated surface/underground areas in Lead, South Dakota - Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), Batavia, Illinois (contracting office and some surface work) - **No specific part numbers or OEM brands are specified; contractors must source compliant stainless-steel piping and materials.

Description

As part of the DUNE experiment, approximately 40,000 metric tons of Argon is required to be transported from the surface to the Central Utility Cavern (CUC) at the 4850 Level. This Argon will arrive at the Ross Shaft Argon Receiving station in liquid form where it will be stored in tanks. It will then be converted to the gaseous phase, where it will be transported underground through a stainless-steel pipeline. This pipeline will be 8” diameter Schedule 10 between the Argon Receiving Facility and the Ross shaft, 6” diameter schedule 10 from Ross shaft collar to the 4850 Level, then return to 8” diameter schedule 10 from the Ross shaft to the CUC.

This SOW defined as “Argon Gas Piping Supply and Installation for LBNF” outlines the requirements for the supply, installation and testing of a stainless-steel pipeline at LBNF as described above.
