The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) implements an accountability measure for the recreational harvest of gag in the exclusive economic zone of the Gulf of America for the 2026 fishing year. The recreational fishing season for Gulf gag opens on September 1 and is projected to reach the annual catch target by October 1, leading to a closure of recreational fishing for gag from October 1 through December 31, 2026. This measure is intended to protect the gag resource by preventing overharvest. The closure includes a zero bag and possession limit for gag during this period.
