Description
In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the J.B Speed Art Museum intends to repatriate certain cultural items that meet the definition of sacred objects or objects of cultural patrimony and that have a cultural affiliation with the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. The collection includes 24 cultural items such as a Sundance rattle, beaded pipe bag, beaded turtle amulet, beaded pouches, bags, moccasins, a coupstick, cradleboard, and lance. These items largely came from a gift by Fredrick Weygold in 1930 and some are museum purchases or found in the collection. Repatriation may occur on or after June 11, 2026, and requests for repatriation must be sent to the authorized representative at the museum.
