The Maritime Administration (MARAD), under the Department of Transportation, is seeking industry input to inform the development of a U.S.-built, scalable, and commercially viable small modular reactor (SMR) system for marine transportation. - Government Buyer: - Maritime Administration (MARAD), Department of Transportation - OEMs and Vendors: - No specific OEMs or vendors are named; the RFI is open to all industry participants with relevant expertise in SMR technology and marine applications - Products/Services Requested: - Information and recommendations on system-centric small modular reactor (SMR) solutions for vessel deployment - No specific part numbers or quantities; this is an information-gathering request - Unique or Notable Requirements: - Emphasis on U.S.-built, scalable, and repeatable SMR systems suitable for marine transportation - Input requested on system architecture, legal and regulatory frameworks, liability and insurance pathways, port acceptance, workforce development, and standards integration - Focus on integration with U.S. shipyard capacity and commercial viability for repeatable deployment - Responses should address technical, regulatory, and commercial aspects to enable SMR adoption in maritime logistics and regulatory frameworks
Description
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is seeking information from the public to support the development of a U.S.-built scalable, repeatable, commercially viable, system-centric small modular reactor (SMR) and their deployment within the marine transportation system. This Request for Information (RFI) focuses on a single vessel or technology demonstration and seeks public feedback on system architecture, liability frameworks, insurance pathways, port acceptance, workforce development, and standards integration for vessel deployment. The goal is to investigate if advancements in SMR technology are usable, scalable, and commercially viable for maritime applications. Responses should address technical, regulatory, and commercial aspects to enable repeatable deployment and integration into existing maritime logistics and regulatory frameworks.
