This notice concerns the intended repatriation of Native American cultural items by the Museum of Us in San Diego, California, under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA): - Government Buyer: - Department of the Interior, National Park Service - Cultural Items for Repatriation: - 71 unassociated funerary objects, including: - 3 grooved stones - 2 strings of glass trade beads - 3 historic Chinese coins - 28 projectile points (from multiple mounds) - 1 lot of carbonized textile material - 1 charmstone - 1 cowbell - 2 stone pipes - 29 Haliotis ornaments - Provenance and Affiliation: - Items originally removed from Folsom Mound, Strawberry (King) Mound, and Cool (Blue Tent) Mound in Sacramento and El Dorado Counties, California - Affiliated with the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, Shingle Springs Rancheria (Verona Tract), California - Notable Requirements: - Repatriation requests may be submitted by lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations with cultural affiliation - Repatriation may occur after a specified date - Additional Context: - The Warren Anatomical Museum at Harvard University is also conducting a similar repatriation process for human remains and funerary objects with tribal affiliations

Description

The Museum of Us intends to repatriate 71 cultural items classified as unassociated funerary objects that have cultural affiliation with Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations. These items include grooved stones, glass trade beads, historic Chinese coins, projectile points, carbonized textile material, charmstone, cowbell, stone pipes, Haliotis ornaments, and others. The items were removed from various mounds in California between 1930 and 1936 and later acquired by the Museum of Us. Repatriation may occur on or after June 4, 2026, and requests for repatriation can be submitted by lineal descendants or affiliated tribes or organizations.
