This opportunity concerns a regulatory update from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) within the Transportation Department: - The FRA has issued a final rule amending 49 CFR Part 215 - Exempts railroad freight cars used exclusively for tourist, historic, excursion, educational, recreational, or private purposes (and not interchanged) from the stenciling requirement for restricted freight cars, including those over 50 years old - No products, services, OEMs, or vendors are involved, as this is a regulatory change rather than a procurement - The rule is designed to reduce regulatory burdens and costs for owners of these cars by eliminating the need for stenciling and related waiver petitions - Notable for its focus on regulatory relief and efficiency for affected entities
Description
This final rule excludes railroad freight cars used exclusively for tourist, historic, excursion, educational, recreational, or private purposes and that are not interchanged from the requirement that all restricted freight cars, including cars more than 50 years old, be stenciled with specific information. The rule aims to reduce regulatory burdens and provide cost savings to owners of these cars by eliminating the stenciling requirement. It also promotes more efficient use of government resources by reducing the need for waiver petitions and reviews. The rule is effective May 28, 2026.
