This notice announces a regulatory update by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), part of the Department of Transportation: - The FRA has repealed a federal requirement related to scheduling bridge load capacity evaluations for track owners. - The repealed rule was a transitional measure for compliance with bridge safety regulations. - The change removes an obsolete provision from 49 CFR Part 237, improving regulatory clarity. - No products, services, or vendors are being procured as part of this action. - No OEMs or commercial suppliers are mentioned or involved. - The update is strictly regulatory and does not affect existing bridge load capacity requirements or safety standards.

Description

This final rule eliminates the Federal requirement that defines the process a track owner must follow when scheduling the evaluation of bridges with no load capacity determination. The requirement was intended as a transitional measure to phase in compliance after the bridge safety regulations became effective and is no longer necessary because the regulations have been in effect for almost 15 years and the transitional period for compliance has ended. The rule removes an obsolete provision from the Code of Federal Regulations, improving readability without impacting other bridge load capacity requirements. The rule is effective May 28, 2026.
