This opportunity invites State geological surveys to partner with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Program for the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) Mine Waste Cooperative Agreements for FY2026. - Government Buyer: - U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Department of the Interior - Mineral Resources Program (MRP), Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) - OEMs and Vendors: - U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the primary federal entity and provider of technical protocols and some equipment (e.g., handheld XRF analyzers) - Products and Services Requested: - Mine waste inventory and geospatial data compilation (ArcGIS geodatabase) - Field-based mine waste characterization (sampling, geochemical and mineralogical analyses, mapping) - Travel support for up to two participants per state to attend the annual Earth MRI workshop in Reston, VA - Equipment such as handheld XRF analyzers and multi-parameter field meters may be provided for project use - Quantities and Funding: - Up to 14 awards, each ranging from $3,000 to $356,000; total funding approximately $5 million - Priority 1: Up to $50,000 for mine waste inventory (minimum 100 records for full funding) - Priority 2: Up to $300,000 for mine waste characterization (includes up to $70,000 for USGS-provided analyses) - Priority 3: Up to $6,000 per state for workshop travel - Unique or Notable Requirements: - Eligibility limited to State geological surveys or those organized under state university systems - Compliance with USGS protocols for sampling, data management, and reporting - All data and deliverables must be made publicly available - No cost-sharing required; substantial federal involvement expected - Equipment provided must be used in accordance with federal property and Buy America requirements - Mandatory registration in SAM.gov - Deliverables due within 90 days after the end of the performance period - Period of Performance: - Maximum award period is 24 months; all funds must be obligated by the end of the fiscal year - Progress reports required every six months for projects longer than 12 months - Key Locations: - USGS Headquarters and offices in Reston, VA; Anchorage, AK; Moffett Field, CA; and the Department of the Interior Natural Resources Library in Washington, DC - Earth MRI workshop held at USGS Headquarters, Reston, VA

Description

The U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Program (MRP), Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI), is accepting proposals for State geological survey Mine Waste activities. The funding supports mine waste inventory and characterization data compilation and acquisition, sampling, and mapping efforts to aid ongoing Earth MRI efforts. State geological surveys may also request travel funds for the 2026 Earth MRI workshop. Approximately $5 million is available for cooperative agreements through a competitive proposal process, with all funds to be obligated by September 30, 2026.
