This opportunity is a forthcoming research funding announcement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD): - The NOFO will support research on olfactory dysfunction related to aging, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and AD-related dementias (ADRD) - Focus on mechanisms of olfactory decline as a health indicator and predictor of dementia risk - Research may involve older adults and/or animal models - Approaches may include cellular, molecular, imaging, physiological, omics, and new approach methodologies (NAMs) - No specific OEMs, vendors, products, or services are requested at this stage - Eligible applicants include nonprofits, tribal, state, and local governments, small businesses, and higher education institutions - No unique requirements beyond research focus and eligibility - The NOFO will use the R01 activity code - This is a presolicitation notice to allow time for project planning and collaboration
Description
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), with the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications investigating the mechanisms underlying the association between olfactory decline and aging or Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD). The research aims to understand olfactory dysfunction as an indicator of health outcomes in older adults and as a predictor of AD/ADRD risk. Studies may include older adults and/or animal models using various approaches such as cellular, molecular, imaging, physiological, omics, and new approach methodologies (NAMs). Applications are not currently being solicited; this notice allows potential applicants time to prepare responsive projects.
