The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is seeking to contract the University of Vancouver (VIU) to deliver certified curriculum lesson modules aimed at training Indigenous Guardians and Indigenous Marine Stewardship staff. The training supports Federal Government investigations and prosecutions related to Southern Resident Killer Whales and other marine mammal or fisheries violations. Six Marine Steward Witness Training classes will be delivered over the 2026/27 fiscal year in British Columbia, each lasting four days. Resource materials from Federal Government organizations will be provided to support the training.
