NMFS Proposes Listing Two Tope Shark Population Segments as Threatened Under the ESA

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), part of NOAA within the Department of Commerce, is proposing to list two distinct population segments (DPSs) of the tope shark as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA): - Southern Africa DPS - Southwest Atlantic DPS - Four other DPSs (Northeast Atlantic, Northeast Pacific, Southwest Pacific, Southeast Pacific) are not proposed for listing - NMFS is seeking public information and comments to inform the final listing determination - No products, services, OEMs, or vendors are requested or mentioned in this notice - The notice is focused on regulatory action, not procurement

Description

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has completed a status review of the tope shark (Galeorhinus galeus) following a petition to list the species as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The species is divided into six distinct population segments (DPSs), with the Southern Africa and Southwest Atlantic DPSs proposed to be listed as threatened due to their risk of extinction in the foreseeable future. The other four DPSs do not meet the criteria for listing. NMFS is soliciting information to inform the final listing decisions.
