CIGIE Elects Cheryl Mason Chairperson
March 25, 2026
The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) has elected Cheryl Mason, the Veterans Affairs Inspector General and former adviser to the Trump administration, as its chairperson for a two-year term beginning April 6, 2026. This leadership change places a high-profile federal oversight official at the helm of CIGIE, the body responsible for coordinating and supporting the work of federal inspectors general across agencies. The appointment has drawn attention from lawmakers and watchdog groups concerned about maintaining the independence and integrity of federal oversight amid political tensions.
- Procurement professionals should note that CIGIEβs leadership influences oversight priorities and audit focus areas that can affect contract compliance and risk assessments across federal agencies.
- Contractors working with the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal entities may experience shifts in audit scrutiny or reporting requirements under Masonβs tenure.
- Organizations involved in federal procurement should consider the potential impact of heightened political sensitivities on inspector general investigations and transparency initiatives.
- This development underscores the importance of robust internal controls and compliance programs to mitigate risks associated with evolving federal oversight dynamics.
CIGIE helps IGs become the most effective they can be, but we also need some kind of back stop for these inspectors general. They should be independent from political interference, not necessarily independent from the guidelines and ethics standards that we hold them to.

If the goal of this appointment is to curry favor with the Trump administration, IG Mason is certainly a clever pick. Unfortunately, all the qualities that make her well suited to appeal to Trump political appointees 6 namely being one herself who advised Secretary Doug Collins 6 are the same qualities that render IG Mason unfit to effectively serve as an independent watchdog.
