Ashe County Approves Landfill and Environmental Building Financing
March 24, 2026
Ashe County Commissioners approved a $16 million financing contract on March 16, 2023, to fund the construction of a new landfill cell and an environmental service building in North Carolina. These projects aim to replace existing debt on the county jail and law enforcement center, extend landfill capacity by 15-20 years, and enhance local sanitation infrastructure. The landfill expansion and environmental building construction are progressing under budget, supporting regional waste management self-sufficiency and economic development.
- The financing contract enables Ashe County to maintain control over waste disposal costs by expanding its landfill capacity, reducing reliance on private landfills and associated fees.
- Contractors Baker Construction and Vannoy's Construction are leading the landfill expansion and environmental service building projects, respectively, presenting opportunities for subcontractors and suppliers in construction and environmental services.
- Procurement professionals should note the county's approach to debt refinancing and infrastructure investment as a model for sustainable local government project financing.
- The projects' focus on sanitation infrastructure highlights growing municipal demand for environmental service facilities, signaling potential market growth in this sector.
We have the gold standard of trash and recycling services in the region when you compare what you got in surrounding counties. And if we did not have that landfill and utilize its services, we would have to haul trash to a private landfill and be at the mercy of their fees and whatever they wanted to charge. Despite the large numbers, we control our own destiny, and if we were having to haul it many miles and pay whatever someone decided to charge us, the numbers would be exponentially larger.
