DIU Launches REEF Undersea Threat Initiative
March 24, 2026
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), in partnership with the United Kingdom Government, has launched the Robotic Exclusion & Engagement Framework (REEF) initiative to solicit scalable technologies capable of detecting, tracking, classifying, and neutralizing undersea threats, including autonomous underwater vehicles and semisubmersibles. Responses to this solicitation (contract number PROJ00607) are due by April 3, 2026. The program prioritizes advanced sensing and artificial intelligence integration with a preference for non-kinetic countermeasures to protect critical maritime infrastructure and expeditionary forces.
- Why this matters: This joint U.S.-U.K. initiative signals increased investment in maritime defense technologies addressing emerging underwater threats, creating opportunities for technology providers specializing in AI-enabled sensing and non-lethal countermeasures.
- Procurement professionals should note the April 3, 2026 response deadline for participation in this solicitation.
- Contractors with expertise in autonomous systems, underwater detection, and AI analytics may find strategic opportunities to contribute to this evolving defense priority.
- The emphasis on scalable, non-kinetic solutions indicates a shift toward innovative, less destructive maritime security technologies, influencing future procurement requirements and technology development roadmaps.
